Official New York State Butterfly Announced
New York held a vote by 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to select an official state butterfly. The winner was the Red-spotted Purple/White Admiral. In second place was the endangered Karner Blue. I took the picture above in the Adirondacks in June 2004.
NJ apparently does not have a state butterfly. Here's a complete list of state butterflies.

A fine choice. I saw my first Red-spotted Purple this past summer and found it a most agreeable butterfly.
I had not heard this and is interesting on why this was considered New York State's Butterfly! Although, I am kinda glad that they didn't pick the Karner Blue since I have never seen one in NY!
It depends where in NY state you are to spot a Karner Blue Butterfly. We are in Saratoga County where they are fairly populous in the wooded areas.
