Planning a trip to Oregon

Beth and I are heading to the Portland, Oregon area the last week of May for a little vacation. I'm going to squeeze in some birding for sure. I've already tapped into a sure-fire resource in my buddy the Born Again Birdwatcher for some inside tips. If anyone has any must-see things in Oregon within 3 hours or so of Portland, let me know in the comments section. I'll be sure to publish a list of my 10 most wanted birds before the trip and we'll see how we do!

Well, obviously you have to go to Astoria. Can't miss the home of the Goonies, after all!

It's funny that you mentioned this Paul. I was just looking at Cannon Beach, OR and this is where those rocks are that are seen in The Goonies. Awesome movie!!!

Darn. If you want within three hours of Portland, then Crater Lake is a no-go. :( Perhaps not the birdiest place in Oregon, but well worth visiting nonetheless. But if you're interested in books, Powell's is a must.

(during my past trips to Oregon, Eugene was my base)

Oregon is a fabulous place. Have a great trip!

Subscribe to OBOL ( Oregon Birders OnLine) for access to a band of cheerful and accomodating Oregon birders. Eugene, Florence and environs are birdy and birdery. Harlow Bielefeldt

Eugene is less than 2 hours from Portland- you should go visit the Cascades Raptor Center! Check out the website- eRaptors.org. (I'm a volunteer there) You can also climb (or drive) Skinner's Butte where you can easily see many species of birds including an occupied Bald Eagle nest.
