Do you know your poo?

Take the National Wildlife Federation's Scat Quiz. I got 4 out of 5. I guess I know most of my poo.

Hey, I got them all right!
Mind you, the fact that I had to count poo density on 600 square kilometres for my Master's degree might have helped a bit. Poo is the same everywhere: Europe, Africa, North America...

Laura, I missed Porcupine too.

Jochen, I really need to know... what exactly is poo density? I have an idea, but let me know.

I got 4 out of 5 also. I missed the first one--bunny poop. The color description threw me off because I have deer and bunnies in my yard and the deer poo is a much darker brown than bunny poo (I know, I know, too much information!)

Well, poo density...
You see, when you have an area of 600 square kilometres and you want to know to what extend a certain mammal species is using which part of that area - not only "they are there or not" but "they are there X times more frequently then elsewhere", you count their poo.
It's quicker and more efficient than mapping the animals when you see them.
It's actually an official field method called "pellet group count".

Nice job, but not quite as nice as mapping River Otters by searching for their poo: their poo is quite obvious most of the times but sometimes, in difficult cases, and if you really, really want to know in a bad way, you can tell River Otter poo by smelling it...

Now Honey, I know you're obsessed with poo but I didn't know you'd share that obsession with the blog world.
