The Image of a Birder
I saw this pop-up ad today while browing the web. Let me start by saying that I have no problem with more "senior" women birders. I know many and call them my friends. I just thought this image shows us that very stereotypical image of a birder and it gave me a good laugh. That's a sweet Questar scope she has there!

That could reflect the targeted demographic of the ad - retirees (or near-retirees) with disposable time and money.
I'm sure you're right on target with that John.
Wow! I know her! That's Pat Moore! She IS Outer Banks birding. She may be the living embodiment of the stereotype but she's probably the one person who absolutely should be on an advertisement like that.
She puts up birders in her guest room when they come out. I'm actually staying with her and her husband this very week when I go out for a pelagic. I'll have to tell her I saw her ad.
Oh, and that is her Questar, and it does kick ass.
Funny Patrick, do you notice that there seem to be more young men birders than young women birders? Seems that way to me at least.
The ad ought to show her funny sneakers in order to be accurate!
When I joined the OK Audubon, and thus the world of birding, last August -- I was/am the youngest member at 46. Sadly, I think the stereotype has had some effect on getting "younger" people interested. I'll admit guilt that it was a nice change to be the "kid" again.
Over here young lady birders is a critically endangered species. They have gone well below their Minimum Viable Population and is at the brink of extinction...
I agree with Laura about the lack of young women birders. At 43, I guess even I don't fit into that category... *sob*
