New US Butterfly Sightings in TX
Besides the Green Jays, Chachalacas, and other great birds, South Texas is also rich with many special butterflies that barely cross the US/Mexico border. The last week has seen two new US records and a bevy of other beautiful and rare butterflies for the US. Check out the highlights:
- A One-spotted Prepona, a first US record, was found on 11/18 at the NABA International Butterfly Park in Mission by a group that included fellow bird blogger Jeff Gordon. Check out Jeff's extremely cool video of the discovery.
- A Guatemalan Leafwing, another US Record, was found on 11/17 in the yard of Berry Nall.
- Eight-spotted Longtail, Guatemalan Cracker, Erato Heliconian, Common Banner, Silver Emperor were all seen at the Butterfly Park on 11/17.

WOW! It seems like we are having an interesting year for out-of-territory species. Climate change?
Not sure honestly... no one has really speculated. I think there are a lot more people looking and a lot of people building gardens down there, so that helps.
