Ding ding ding! We have a winner. Beth and I booked our flight the other day, but don't have a full itinerary planned yet. It will involve Sydney, Melbourne, and the Great Barrier Reef in some capacity. You can be sure there'll be some serious blogging afterwards.

Have fun! When Wren mentioned "the old gum tree," my memory whirled back to fifth grade music class. "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he."
I must be one of the few people who never learned that song. My mom would sing it once in a while after I became a birder. She never got past the first line though so I have no clue what is correct!
Good on ya mate. I'll have to teach you some rugby rules so you can impress the locals. Actually the rugby tri-nations (Oz, SA, NZ)is going on at the moment so I am glued in front of the TV at VERY odd hours on a Saturday morning. Anyway, birding in Oz will be awesome and you'll also enjoy the beer, wine (chardonnay) etc.
PS: We have one of those musical books that has the Kookaburra song in it. Unfortunately I make up the words as I go, which is the case for most of the songs ;-)
Congratulations - and nice choice for the honeymoon! (My fiance and I chose to go the (polar) opposite and are heading to Alaska in Sept for ours.) Looking forward to the posts! Cheers!
Live in NJ, work the Corporate life by day, try to be an amateur naturalist the rest of the time. I currently volunteer as an Associate Naturalist for the NJ Audubon Society.

I know that bird, and I'm pretty sure I remember the destination, but I ain't sayin' in order to let some of the other kids play.
Jealous, I'm so jealous. You will go out and find one sitting in an old gum tree, won't you?
The zoo?
Can I guess?
Australia?

Lucky rascals! Have a great time--and see a bird or two, too!

Lucky! That's awesome. I am insanely jealous.
And I always thought the lyrics were,
"Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
eating all the gumdrops he can see.
Laugh, Kookaburra!
Laugh, Kookaburra!
Save some gum for me."
But I suppose it's right both ways. Or a different verse?

What the Hell is this song everyone is talking about? Have I missed a great ode to birds?
