Birding on a Soap Opera

My wife is addicted to Days of Our Lives, a US soap opera. I will admit that I do watch and enjoy the ridiculous story lines. Ok, stop laughing. In any event, we were watching it today and two of the characters were birding! Here's a snapshot:

The character on the left remarked that the American Goldfinch was "much too far north for this time of year." The guy on the right responded, "To me they're just rats with feathers." That's a Peterson Field Guide in his hand, the 5th edition. Pretty funny.

Another old lady in opera glasses and a silly hat portraying a "birder". *sigh*

I'd much rather see the sexy lead identify a second year Thayer's Gull and call it in to the Rare Bird Hotline before leaving to rescue his mistress from the clutches of his evil twin, Diego.

Where is Kate Humble when we need her the most?

And if she has goldfinches "too far north for this time of the year" during ... well ... any time of the year, she must be birding high up in the boreal zone. I am surprised a US soap opera would be centered around Yellowknife, ey?

Jochen - how many birding points do I lose for not knowing who Kate Humble was?
Also, the funny thing about this show is that they live in "Salem" - yet they never tell you what state they're in. It's sort of like The Simpsons in that way. We think it's somewhere in Ohio or the surrounding area. They seem to be able to drive to Cleveland and CHicago fairly quickly.

Nate - me thinks you have seen some soap operas in your time. And Days of Our Lives has had its share of evil twins for sure. My favorite character was a guy with an eyepatch, aptly named "Patch," who would make all of these bad jokes like "Look me in the eye and tell me that." It was ridiculous.

Kate Humble is the new persident of the RSPB.
ImageGoogle her, if your wife isn't watching your monitor.

Not exactly stereotype female birder looks...

As one who appreciates over-the-top ridiculity in all its forms, I suppose you could say I have a sof spot for soap operas.

Don't feel bad-My wife has me watching Young and The Restless on tape sometimes.-No birders on there yet though-although I did notice that there is a House Wren singing whenever they show the Forester home on Bold and the Beautiful.

My wife watches the (obviously German) sit-com "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten" (good times, bad times), which is about as thrilling, intelligent and well thought-out as its title suggests.
You have no idea, folks, I tells ya, you have no idea just how abyssmally bad times are when she has me watching it with her...

Jochen - LOL! You have our sympathy.

Abe - I have heard Rock Pigeons referred to that way, but not birds in general.
